Dessert Recipe: Apple Crumble
Apple Crumble
Lactose free. Gluten free & vegan option available.
There’s nothing better than settling into camp after a long day and tucking into a warm bowl of cinnamon spiced oats topped with a buttery crumble. A winner every time!
Ingredients
Serves 1
Ziplock 1:
- 25g dried apple
- 1/4 Tbsp brown sugar
- A pinch of cinnamon
Ziplock 2:
- 0.2 cups rolled oats
- 0.1 cup flour
- 0.35 tsp white sugar
Other:
- 1 tsp ghee
Method
Before hiking:
- Place all ingredients in their corresponding bags. Keep the ghee in a separate container.
When hiking:
- Mix ghee into Ziplock 2. Add the ghee slowly so that you can make it as buttery as you like. IF the ghee is cold (and solid), then you will need to work it in with your fingers.
- Place Ziplock 1 in a pot and just cover with water.
- Simmer on a low heat for 5-6mins, stirring frequently to make sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom. The apples will expand slightly as they rehydrate. Note that this step is to just warm the apples, the mixture doesn’t need any cooking.
- At the same time (if possible, otherwise after the apples are heated up), place Ziplock 2 in a pan and cook on a low heat. Stir constantly to ensure the oats don’t burn. Take off the heat when the oats have started to brown.
- Top the apple and cinnamon mix (ensuring you keep the leftover juice from the pot) with the oat mix. Enjoy!
Notes
Dried Apple: This recipe works great with any dried fruit. My favourite is apple, but any fruit (like peaches, blueberries etc), will work really well!
Gluten Free: To make the recipe gluten free, substitute the rolled oats for quinoa oats.
Vegan: You can substitute the ghee for oil if you want to make the recipe vegan.
